Meet your new treasurer
Jim Wilwerding, M.Div., MA, LMHC, CADC, NCC

Jim Wilwerding is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC).

His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in chemistry (1987) and a master’s degree in mental health counseling (2004) both from the University of Northern Iowa as well as a master of divinity degree (1991) from the University of St. Thomas (MN).

Jim’s professional background includes pastoral ministry work with children and adolescents, substance abuse counseling through the Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC) in Cedar Rapids, IA, work as a therapist for adolescents and families through Children and Families of Iowa, Cornerstone Recovery and work as a provider of in-home therapy through LifeWorks, Inc. in the Polk and Warren County area. He is currently a co-owner of New Heights Counseling Resources, Inc. in Des Moines.

His areas of interest/specialty include all aspects of mental health counseling for adults, adolescents, and families in the areas of depression, anxiety, addictions, codependency and spirituality. Jim states that he “draws upon diverse resources to approach the counseling process from the perspective of the client’s strengths and place in life.” A particular passion of Jim’s is Adventure Based Group Counseling.

Jim joined IMHCA in 2005 and has recently joined the board as Treasurer. Jim’s primary goals for IMHCA are: 1) to increase the number of educational, networking and professional identity development opportunities offered through our organization, 2) to improve the representation of membership in IMHCA to include all geographical areas of the state and 3) to increase our organization’s public visibility and recognition of IMHCA as the premier professional organization for mental health professionals in our state.



The Iowa Mental Health Counselors Association is a chapter of the American Mental Health Counselors Association. IMHCA is the only organization dedicated exclusively to meeting the professional needs of mental health counselors in Iowa. Its sole purpose is to promote the profession of mental health counseling and the needs of our clients.
